About Run for the Ferry

Bowen Childrens CentreEleven years ago, a group of running enthusiasts on Bowen Island envisioned a foot race that reflected the island’s unique character.  They gave it a name to which all islanders could relate:  Run for the Ferry.

Word of the Run has spread beyond Bowen’s shores and now locals face stiff competition as runners from all over the Lower Mainland enjoy a short (20 minute) ferry ride across beautiful Howe Sound on the last Saturday morning in August, followed by a race along scenic roads and trails.  Run for the Ferry attracts hundreds of racers and spectators, and has become a much anticipated community event that marks the beginning of Bowfest, the island’s annual celebration.

Run for the Ferry is presented by Bowen Children’s Centre, a registered non-profit society with deep roots on Bowen Island.  The race is a fundraiser for the Centre which, in turn, supports other Bowen Island non-profits.

The race starts at 8:15am on August 26, at the Snug Cove ferry dock.  The registration table and finish line are nearby.

Participants may register for either the 5K or the 10K race.  Both courses follow a picturesque, winding route through the woods and meadows of Crippen Park and along a portion of Mt. Gardner Road, finishing at the Deep Bay lagoon on the outskirts of Snug Cove.  This event is open to runners and walkers of all ages.

Run for the Ferry is sanctioned by the B.C. Amateur Athletics Association.  Race timing is provided by Race Headquarters.

This community event is a fundraiser for Bowen Children’s Centre: runners and walkers may collect pledges to support the Centre’s programs for children, and earn rewards.

Some runners enter the event seeking keen competition, while others strive to meet a personal challenge.  Many enter simply for healthy recreation.  But whatever their motivation, Bowen Islanders and mainlanders alike have come to look forward to the annual Run for the Ferry.
