In 1995, a group of running enthusiasts on Bowen Island envisioned a foot race that reflects the island’s unique character. They gave it a name to which all islanders could relate: Run for the Ferry.

Word of the Run spread beyond Bowen’s shores and now locals face stiff competition as runners from all over the Lower Mainland. Enjoy a short ferry ride across beautiful Howe Sound on a Saturday morning in late August, followed by a race along scenic roads and trails.

Run for the Ferry attracts hundreds of racers and spectators, and has become a much anticipated community event that marks the beginning of “Bowfest”, the island’s annual community festival.

Race entrants are treated to healthy food after the run and a free ticket to the Bowfest grounds is included in their race entry fee. Cash prizes and prizes from the sponsoring running store await the competitive runners. The generous folks at Helijet provide a draw prize of a trip for two between Vancouver and Victoria for the lucky runner.

All proceeds from the event and the sponsorships go to support the efforts of the Bowen Community Housing Association.

Race Day Ferry

Coastal Link Ferries will be running extra sailings on Bowfest. Runners who would like to take the 8:00 am ferry from Coal Harbour in Vancouver to Snug Cove on Bowen Island should be sure to make reservations.

Run for the Ferry and Bowfest are a celebration of running, live entertainment, fabulous food and activities for the whole family. These spirited events highlight the best of what the Bowen Island community has to offer, including breathtaking scenery, unmatched hospitality and passionate community spirit.
